10-13-05   More About the Tanned Fur Program

2005 has been another successful year for the SDTA Tanned Fur Project. A total of 214 pelts have been donated by SDTA members in the past year. Your generous donations make this program possible. Thanks to all the members who have donated fur in the past year!

There was a special tanned fur donation drawing at the business meeting in Volga on September 17. Here are the Tanned Fur Project prize winners for 2005:

First Prize:  $100 Peterson Furs Gift Certificate - Dennis Tilden, Baltic, SD

Second Prize:  6 - 220 Bridger Traps -Galen Sichmeller, Butler, SD

Third Prize: 4 - 1.65 Bridger Traps - Lance Koch, Aberdeen, SD

Fourth Prize:  4 - 1.65 Bridger Traps-  Calvin Huber, Hoven, SD

Fifth Prize:  4 - 1.65 Bridger Traps -  Odon Corr, Wessington Springs, SD

There will be a tanned fur donation drawing again in 2006. To be eligible to win all you need to do is donate a pelt (5 muskrat = 1 pelt) to the Tanned Fur Project. Your name goes in the drawing once for each pelt donated (possum are no longer accepted). You do not need to be present at the drawing to win. Donations may be dropped off at the following locations.

With the number of donations this year I would not have been able to get all the fur processed and shipped without the help of other members. There was a SDTA skinning bee held at Peterson Furs on May 7. I think that everyone enjoyed working together on the fur donations. Thanks to the following members that came to help: John Almquist, Matt Bennett, Michael Bennett, Joseph Bennett, Terry Olson, Dennis Tilden, Orlyn Piehl and Todd Schaefer. I also need to thank Neal Kittelson, a non-member, who tacked beaver, and my wife, Sue, for making BBQ and rhubarb cobbler for everyone.

Thank to everyone who donated or helped process fur for the Tanned Fur Project in 2005. This is a very valuable project that helps fund youth education and promotes fur throughout the state of South Dakota. We can always need more help at our gun show booths, water festivals and at the Black Hills Stock Show. If you are interested in helping at one of our upcoming events, please contact a director.
