Fur is Fun

The SDTA was organized in 1963. Since then it has earned a respectable reputation in conservation in South Dakota, representing the vital interests of trappers and predator callers in South Dakota on a state and national level. The SDTA is affiliated with the following:

National Trappers Association, Inc.
The US Sportsman's Alliance
Black Hills Regional Multiple Use Coalition
South Dakota Ducks Unlimited
United Sportsmen for South Dakotans

The SDTA works closely with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks to help ensure that trapping seasons and regulations are fair and represent good management policies of furbearer populations. The SDTA has  frequently been called upon to lend technical assistance and information to the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks and to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries at South Dakota State University to assist in research, environmental assistance, education and nuisance animal control.

Responsibilities of the Trapper

Americans are fortunate to live in a land with abundant natural resources. Furbearing animals are a "renewable resource" that can be harvested annually with proper management. Furbearer populations are controlled largely by their habitats, population density, competition with other animals and man, disease and man's exploitation of the environment. The single most important furbearer manager is the trapper. There are many responsibilities in being a trapper. Trappers must obey and respect state and federal laws governing each furbearer. They must also respect public and private property, honor the rights of other outdoor user groups, check their traps regularly, use proper traps and selective sets, properly handle pelts, dispose of animal carcasses properly, help others who need skills and support and defend proper conservation practices.
